BANYALBUFAR, MALLORCA: ONE OF THE ISLAND’S BEST-KEPT SECRETS

Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar is one of Mallorca’s lesser-known little gems, a charming town located in the heart of the Tramuntana mountains with impressive views of the sea, which keeps little secrets, such as its vineyards and coves that you will love.

LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF BANYALBUFAR, MALLORCA

This town, located approximately 28 km from the capital and from our Boutique hotel in Palma, Posada Terra Santa, is undoubtedly worth a visit to learn about its history and enjoy a unique atmosphere on the island.

The origin of Banyalbufar dates back to the 10th century approximately, when the Arabs settled in the area, converting it into a nucleus of houses and developing an irrigation system through aqueducts. Years later, under the mandate of Jaume I, the town became especially famous for its cultivation of Malvasia grapes, and today the wine culture is being taken up again.

As in the rest of the island, throughout its history there have always been attacks by pirates and corsairs by sea, so there was a large presence of observation towers on top of the mountain, as well as defensive towers.

WHAT TO SEE IN BANYALBUFAR TOWN

HISTORIC CENTER

If you want to know in depth the history of the town, we recommend you to visit the historic center, starting in the Plaza de Vila. From there you can walk the streets, with very nice corners to take pictures, and find historic buildings within the complex known as the Barony, with its defensive tower dating from the 17th century.

ARTISANAL WINERIES

Another great option is to visit some of the artisanal wineries that have taken up the ancient tradition of the town. Some of the most recommended are Ca’n Pico and Son Vives, where you can do a tasting, visit the vineyards, and take home a bottle of the famous Malvasia wines.

TOWER OF SES ÀNIMES

The watchtower of Ses Ànimes is located in the homonymous viewpoint. It is a defensive construction built in the seventeenth century to warn of possible enemies on the coasts. This is a place where you will enjoy spectacular views, both during the day and at sunset. Without a doubt, it is a must-see!

BANYALBUFAR COVE

This is a small quiet cove surrounded by stone walls formed by the mountains. This is one of the favorite places to dive or swim in a relaxing way, with its crystal clear waters.

ES PORT DES CONONGE

From the town of Banyalbufar there is a direct hiking route to Es Port des Canonge, known as Sa volta des General or Camí des Carabineros. It is a route of approximately one hour through mountains and pine forests, which arrives directly at the picturesque fishing port and the cove that receives the same name. A route to contemplate the landscape that culminates in an idyllic place with fishermen’s houses surrounding it.

As you can see, the town of Banyalbufar is an essential visit in Mallorca to enjoy its natural environment of mountains and sea at the same time, since you will find some magnificent landscapes, especially at sunset.

We are waiting for you at Posada Terra Santa!
